President’s Message

I am writing this message on 9/11 and thinking about what makes our Country great and the sacrifices Americans are willing to make to do the right thing.
I remember the morning of 9/11, 15 years ago.  I was working in Queens when we heard that the first tower was hit.  I could see the towers from work and could see the smoke.  The rest of the day is history.
Today, my Church held a special memorial Mass and the firefighters from the local firehouse attended.  My son-in-law was one of them.  I sat there thinking about the families who are still suffering the loss of their loved ones.  I thought about today’s young police, firefighters and emergency service workers who leave home every day to do their “job” without knowing what may happen to prevent them from coming home that night.  I thought about our voluntary military force who daily sacrifice their lives in endless conflicts to keep us safe and secure, and I am thankful to each and every one of them.  America is a great Country filled with great people.   People who love family, tradition, their culture but above all they love America!  We are blessed by them and their families.  They are the best of America.
Our parents and grandparents came to the United States to give themselves and us a better life, a life filled with choices and options.  We were told we could be whatever we set our mind to be as long as we were willing to work hard and sacrifice to achieve it.  This is what we now hope for our children and our grand children.  Today, OSIA gives us the opportunity to embrace our culture and our brothers and sisters of Italian heritage.  We are able to give back, through the various charities and benefits, to people and causes which are near and dear to our hearts.  Whether it is Cooley’s Anemia, Alzheimer’s, Gift of Sight, Autism, Social Justice, or the Garibaldi Meucci Museum, Italian – American’s are willing to share with those who are most in need.  I hope we never change!
Today, I send my regards to all the members of our Lodge. I thank you for being the special people you are.  I appreciate your kindness, generosity and support.  I look forward to working and celebrating with each of you at our monthly meetings and at our Lodge events this year.  Together we are strong, together we are great, together we can accomplish anything!  God Bless You All and God Bless America!
Fraternally,
Maria
